Pioneers

Trunk

Settlers traveling with families often arrived in covered wagons, which provided limited space for their belongings. Every item needed for their new life had to be thoughtfully packed. Trunks like this one were used to store everything from kettles to clothing and blankets. Take a look inside to see what might have been packed for the journey.

Stove

This compact stove was small enough to be packed in a covered wagon, providing a practical solution for cooking during the long journey. Once settlers reached their destination, it was adapted for use in their first log cabin or sod house.

Rail Road

From 1871 to 1878, railroads expanded through southern Minnesota, with Winnebago serving as the terminus or end of the line until 1878. This brought a surge of business to the city, as settlers from surrounding areas traveled to Winnebago for lumber and other supplies to build their new homes
